When you’re just a kid, you don’t need to worry about the health risks of your favourite snacks
The health risks posed by eating foods from overseas are often overlooked, new research suggests.
It comes after the government announced plans to phase out the use of many of the products found in British supermarkets, which will lead to fewer imports.
The study, by researchers at the University of Southampton, found that many of those imported foods had high levels of mercury, a chemical which can cause a range of diseases including kidney and liver damage.
The paper, published in the Journal of Toxicology, was based on data from the UK National Food Safety Laboratory, which collects data on foods and their processing.
“In the UK, food and drink from overseas accounts for about one-fifth of our imported food imports and, of these, almost all of them are from overseas,” Professor Simon Lehner, the lead author of the study, told the BBC.
“What we have found is that this food has a lot of mercury in it, which is a huge risk.”
Food from the United States and China has a higher mercury content than British foods, according to the study.
Professor Lehner and his colleagues said the study also showed that many products were imported from overseas to make them palatable, with some products including chicken salad and cheese made from chicken meat.
“These imports have a very different taste to the British product,” he said.
“There are some very well known ingredients that we found in those products that are found in the British food and drinks and have been proven safe.”
It’s important that people understand that it’s important to check the ingredients in the products before you buy them, so you can make sure they are safe.
“He said there were also products that were made from other countries, and the majority of those could contain mercury, but they were not listed in the food safety database.
He said it was important for consumers to make sure the products they bought were safe before they started eating them.”
If they are not safe, we don’t know that they’re safe, so it’s not recommended that people buy them,” he explained.”
We’re also working on ways to make food safer, so we’re not seeing any change in the numbers of people eating these foods.
“However, we think that these food imports will be phased out in a phased-out way in the future.”
